It's time to learn about jojoba oil! The next ingredient in our Spotlight Series turns out to be the answer to dry and damaged hair. It isn't a store bought product or brand... it's a natural ingredient! This is what you should know about jojoba oil...
What is Jojoba Oil?
First of all, we know it's spelled with a J, but it's actually pronounced "ho-ho-ba" oil (more than one team member at NaturAll has made the mistake at least once)! This oil is derived from the jojoba plant, native to the Southwest region of the United States as well as Northern Mexico.
Although it's called an oil, it's really more of a plant wax than an oil. This is important because jojoba oil's composition is actually extremely similar to that of sebum, a natural oil that moisturizes the scalp and hair.
What Does Jojoba Oil do for Your Hair?
1. Jojoba oil is an amazing moisturizer.
Since jojoba oil and sebum are so similar, your scalp will absorb and drink jojoba oil right up, just as it would natural sebum! This means jojoba oil replenishes the sebum on your scalp if it's depleted, but it doesn't leave a greasy residue or clog your pores. It also brings balance to your natural oil levels, making it a great product even if your scalp is too oily.
2. Jojoba oil soothes the skin and prevents irritation.
In addition, jojoba oil is an emollient- it soothes the skin, unclogs pores, and prevents skin irritations. It treats dry hair and dandruff, eliminates frizz, and adds shine and softness to your hair.
3. Jojoba oil can help with alopecia.
If that weren't enough, jojoba oil is also used as a natural treatment for alopecia, a hair loss condition! Combine jojoba oil with essential oils (like we do in our Jamaican Black Castor Oil Growth Serum) to moisturize and protect your hair.
