Falling For NaturAll: Valentine's Day Hairstyle Guide

It is here! That one romantic night that comes around every year, Valentine’s Day. A time that is to be filled with love, appreciation, adoration and if you’re lucky, gifts 😉. Now all of this is, by tradition, usually wrapped up into one moment which is date night. Now there are many ways this can go down. It could be a night out on the town, dinner for two, a weekend get away or  maybe a cozy living room picnic. No matter what, you wanna look good.

Here at NaturAll, we want to equip you with an arsenal of choices for that special, romantic night. Here we are going to discuss a few tried and true styles for any kind of night. Many of the bundles NaturAll has to offer include the ultimate array of products. Whether you are looking for a style that is big and flirtatious or something that is practical enough to wear all day long. For my single people, this is for you too! There’s nothing like dating yourself because as we all know, self love is the best love. Here is a guide on how to achieve the ideal style for Valentine's Day 2021:

Foundation! Foundation! Foundation!

Before you even begin to style, you will want to start with clean, detangled hair. When you begin the process of washing your hair, you want to make the process as easy as possible. Let’s face it, wash day can be LONG, especially if you’re planning to do a style a bit more intricate than a wash and go. We advise to section your hair at the beginning of your styling process. While working in sections, you have less hair to work with at once so you decrease the risk of your coils intertwining like they so desperately want to. Being able to focus on one section at a time will help you to be more gentle which will decrease breakage, single strand knots and less tugging and pulling; which can lead to thinning hair or baldness.

Now that you’ve sectioned your hair, you have to detangle. The keyword here is DETANGLED. The number one rule of thumb to ensure that you can manipulate your hair freely is to detangle your hair while wet. Along with detangling the hair while wet, it is a bonus if you add a bit of product for extra slip. This is why you will find many NaturAllistas say it is best to detangle while using our Hydrating Conditioner or while they are deep conditioning with any of our Ice Cream Treatment Deep Conditioners. Both of these products provide incredible slip while simultaneously penetrating the hair shaft to hydrate and nourish while you run your comb, fingers or brush through. NaturAll’s AvoKiwi Wash & Go 6-Step Recipe contains all of the necessary ingredients to provide your wash day with all it needs for your natural hair.

AvoKiwi Wash & Go 6-Step Recipe

Wash Day

  •  Saturate hair with warm water. Apply a quarter-sized amount of Hydrating AvoKiwi Shampoo, work into a lather. Rinse thoroughly. Repeat as necessary.
  •  After cleansing with our shampoo, work a generous amount of Hydrating AvoKiwi Conditioner through hair from roots to ends. Finger detangle and comb hair in sections. Rinse thoroughly.
  •  Store in the freezer until ready for use. Thaw at room temperature. After cleansing and conditioning, divide hair into quadrants. Apply Ice Cream Treatment, focusing on the ends. Cover your head with shower cap and let treatment sit for 20-40 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with water.

Style It!

Now that you have perfectly prepped your hair, it is time to choose the style of the night! We’re going to walk through a few staple styles that can leave you feeling cute, sexy, confident, mysterious or any combination that you like! Use this guide to help you choose what style screams “Night of Romance” to you!

Ol’ Reliable- The Wash & Go

So you might have not planned to go anywhere or maybe you just didn’t feel like going through the hassle of twisting, pinning, tying and all of the other actions that come with more complicated styles. This we get. There is hope, however! The one and only that always has your back. A simple wash and go. Now we all know, as naturals, that wash and go’s aren’t necessarily simple but they are less frustrating than most styles. A little leave in and a bit of shingling with your favorite custard should do the trick! Now like all of the styles we will mention, we want to start with the steps I mentioned in the beginning. Now follow these quick steps below and you’ll have a bomb wash and go that dominates the room with defined coils (yea, I’m talking to you my 4C sister 😉), bounce and shine.

  • After cleansing, conditioning and deep conditioning, apply our Hydrating Leave-In Conditioner to damp hair. Finger detangle while applying to the hair.
  • Apply a small amount of Hydrating AvoKiwi Curl Custard to clean, damp hair. Part hair into small sections and use fingers to rake through hair from root to tip. Remember a little goes a long way! Over applying a styling product can result in flaking when hair dries.
  • Apply a dime-sized amount of our Hydrating Oil Blend throughout the hair, focusing on your ends to seal in the moisture.
  • Pro Tip: If your hair begins to dry up before you are finished, spritz the hair with a bit of water

Twist it Out!

You can never go wrong with a hydrated, super defined and durable twist out. You can manipulate this style to frame the face any way you’d like. You can style it off the shoulder. You can pin into an updo. We love a style with versatility! As mentioned before, please be sure to begin with clean, detangled, damp hair. You can use our AvoKiwi Protective Styling 6-Step Recipe to create an amazing twist out. This bundle also includes the necessary steps for providing a clean base to work with. Follow these fews steps and you're off!

  • Apply a generous amount of Hydrating AvoKiwi Moisturizer and rake through damp hair from roots to ends.
  • Use a fingertip amount of the Hydrating AvoKiwi Twisting Paste and warm it between hands to soften. Adding a little at a time, style as desired (this is when you can start to freestyle) Apply to frizzy areas to add extra hold and definition.
  • Apply a dime-sized amount of our Hydrating Oil Blend dime throughout the hair, focusing on your ends to seal in the moisture.

Pro Tip: If you rock a 4C pattern on your crown, check out our AvoKiwi 4C 4-Step Recipe. This bundle was curated specifically for you and includes all the necessities without the extras!

Low Manipulation- Slick Updo

Now here comes a style that is sure to fit any mood. A classic updo can be turned into any style, whether you want to make it fun by adding extra accessories or keep it classy with a few swooped edges. Either way, you cannot help but feel confident as you slip into that little black dress or those favorite pairs of sweats. You can achieve a sleek updo by incorporating some of our Classic Kitchen products with our new Hydrating AvoKiwi Line. While using the clean foundation you have created on wash day, you can achieve a beautiful bun (with extensions if needed). This style can be worn all day and held until your plans for later on.

  • Apply a generous amount of Hydrating AvoKiwi Moisturizer and rake through damp hair from roots to ends.
  • Apply a small amount of  Curl Defining Flaxseed Gel to the entirety of your head. Remember, a little goes a long way! Finger rake to ensure even distribution.
  • With a soft but durable brush, begin to brush your hair into a ponytail shape (if you have a bit of length, you can opt for a low bun. If it is too difficult to direct your hair downwards without flyaways, go for a middle or high bun. You can add hair later for volume)
  • Rub a generous amount of our Flaxseed Gel Edge Control between your fingers and begin to distribute around the edges of your head and continue brushing upwards. When you feel your hair is flat enough, tie with a hair tie, hair lace or your choice of hair accessory.
  • Style edges as desired.

Pro Tip: Be sure to wrap this style for as long as possible! You want to be sure it is thoroughly dry.

Advanced Class: Box Braids

This one's for my more seasoned NaturAllistas. It takes a specific skill set to be able to install your own box braids. For that we give KUDOS! Well, even if you are not installing them yourself, you’ll want the right products to be used regardless! Box braids are an amazing choice as they are another versatile style honey! You can tie up your braids into a long pony. You can twist them up into a classy bun. You can add hair jewelry, play with different colors or even shape them into a cute, blunt bob. To add to these perks, this is another great way we can apply the AvoKiwi Protective Styling 6-Step Recipe. Using our Hydrating Twisting Paste will help you create a long lasting protective style that will last beyond Valentine’s Day. Follow these next damps on clean, damp hair.

  • Apply a generous amount of Hydrating AvoKiwi Moisturizer and rake through damp hair from roots to ends.
  • Section your hair into quadrants. Begin with one section and start to part in your desired style (straight boxes, diamond shape, free parts)
  • Use a fingertip amount of the Hydrating AvoKiwi Twisting Paste and warm it between hands to soften. Adding a little at a time, style as desired. Apply to frizzy areas to add extra hold and definition.
  • Apply a dime-sized amount of our Hydrating Oil Blend to your roots and the length of your braids, focusing on your ends to seal in the moisture.

Pro-Tip: If you are using extensions for this style, skip adding oil to the length of the braid and focus on your roots and scalp.

We source ingredients directly from small farmers in Jamaica and Ghana, so we always know how our ingredients are sourced and exactly who is being supported by our business. We are proud to support Black farmers and small businesses around the world. We believe that what goes on your body is as important as what goes in it. Too many hair products are made with synthetic ingredients that are irritating, damaging, or even hazardous, and the problem is worse in hair products marketed to Black women.
