5 Stunning Styles to Braid Your Natural Hair

For all of my natural hair queens, I know it can be hard finding different hairstyles that work with your hair type and curl pattern. Sometimes it seems like you have to straighten your hair to have the most fun and creative styles but that is simply NOT true! There are many hairstyles perfect for your hair type where you can be unapologetically you with your natural hair and all its glory!

Whether you’re looking for an easy braided hairstyle for the gym or you’re late to work or maybe you just need something on the protective side while still keeping it fun, here are five styles that are sure to turn heads! These braided hairstyles for your natural hair are perfect for a night out, when you’re in a rush, going on vacation, the office, and so much more!

Prepping Your Hair

The most important thing to do before braiding your hair is to add in some leave-in conditioner. The AvoKiwi Leave-In Conditioner is great for beautifully hydrated hair that will leave your natural curl types nice and juicy. It will also help with detangling any hair type to make braiding and installations easier. For any of my tender headed girls, this is the perfect product for you! Use a little extra on problem areas and check out our Essential Styling Bundle to help section off your hair and detangle it. Remember wet hair is easier to work with when it comes to detangling and always part your hair into sections to minimize breakage and to detangle faster and more thoroughly.

Now, if you plan on keeping your hair braided for multiple days, it’s important to hydrate your hair so when you take it out, the hair will still be nice, healthy, and moisturized. You can even wear it as a second hairstyle! You’ll want to use a sulfate-free shampoo to remove any build ups like our AvoKiwi Hydrating Shampoo. This is the perfect way to thoroughly clean your hair beforehand along with the AvoKiwi Conditioner to soften it. And if you’re installing any braids, it’s important to deep condition beforehand so your hair can stay strong while in its protective style. It’s best to use the Hydrating Fresh Frozé Treatment Deep Conditioner to avoid damaged or brittle hair when you remove your braids. Our Fresh Frozé Treatment Deep Conditioner is also great for repairing, strengthening, and hydrating your hair before and after installing any long-lasting hairstyle. If you consistently keep up with deep condition treatments it will leave your hair even better than it was before and more manageable in the future. Trust me, your hair will thank you!

Now that we got all of our prepping out of the way, it’s time to get working on the fun and fierce hairstyles great for any hair type!

1. Flower Crown

With this hairstyle you can never drop your crown, queens! This is a simple and easy go-to style for when you want to protect your hair from any heat damage, are in a rush, or just want to change things up a little. This hairstyle is perfect for our 4B and 4C ladies, but everyone can get in on this crowned style no matter the hair type, curl type, and curl pattern.

For this, you’ll want to make a part anywhere (the right side is always my go-to part for this) and make two big cornrows that encompasses all of your hair. Braid the cornrows around your head, right at the edge of your hair. If you need something even quicker and easier try twists instead of the cornrows. When finished, be sure to set your hair so you don’t get any pesky fly-aways throughout the day and keep some bobby-pins on deck, just in case. Using our Hydrating Leave-In Conditioner is the best way to leave your hair silky smooth throughout the day because you don’t want to miss out on beautifully hydrated hair even when you’re in a rush! It will always help control any frizz or breakage associated with high porosity hair.

2. Lemonade Braids

Sometimes you just need to channel your inner Beyonce and rock those feed-ins. Recently, made more popular by Beyonce, these braids are filled with fierceness for any occasion. For this look, part your hair to the side (any side will do) and start with micro (or jumbo) braids that are all sweeping to the opposite side of your part. Get your feed-ins ready to add extra length or even a pop of color. If you’re feeling extra sassy or want a boho chic look, try adding beads to the ends.

With this hairstyle, be sure to go through all the steps of prepping your hair to keep it happy and healthy when you take it out. It may be tempting to skip all the steps for wash day before you install braids, but it is necessary and totally worth it! The AvoKiwi Protective Styling 6-Step Recipe is the easiest and best way to remember all the steps of prepping before installing in any long-lasting braids. With this bundle, you can save extra money and don’t need to worry about missing any pre-treatment hair care to leave your hair happy when you take it out. With these six simple steps, you can achieve Beyonce level fierceness in no time!

Step 1: Hydrating Shampoo

Step 2: Hydrating Conditioner

Step 3: Hydrating Fresh Frozé Treatment Deep Conditioner

Step 4: Hydrating Moisturizer

Step 5: Hydrating Twisting Paste

Step 6: Hydrating Oil Blend

3. Fierce Zebra Cornrows

Okay, I may have made up this name, but I think it’s the perfect description. Once again, this is another fun and protective hairstyle perfect for your 4B and 4C hair types. As always, be sure to hydrate your hair and use some Hydrating Leave-In Conditioner to make things easier on yourself. We want to work smarter, not harder, when it comes to achieving these fierce hairstyles.

For this style, part your hair down the middle and create cornrows from each side of your head going towards your middle part (like zebra stripes). Tie off the braids as they meet at your part, then twist the rest of your hair all the way to the ends and tie them off again. Once you’re finished with all the twists, arrange them into a ponytail (or multiple ponytails) for a hairstyle that will turn eyes! Don’t forget to slay those edges down with our Flaxseed Gel Edge Control! If you want some extra length or fun colors, add feed-ins to your style.

4. Cornrows into Puff Buns

For any of my 4B ladies, this is the fun and cute hairstyle you’ve been looking for! Perfect for any curl pattern, these Power Puff Girls buns are great to get your hair off your face, slicked back, and show off those amazing curl patterns we all love! With this hairstyle, try to add in accessories to really stand out from the crowds. I love using gold hair clamps and tying my favorite color strings (or shoelaces) around my buns.

Start this hairstyle off by parting your hair down the middle. Section off your hair and add our Flaxseed Gel Edge Control to really define those parts! Braid as many cornrows as you like and then tie them off at the top of your head (where you want to put your buns) leaving the rest of your hair in all its 4B natural glory. Tie your unbraided hair into two buns respectively, for your part, and fluff out those buns hun! Remember to add in some Curl Defining Flaxseed Gel to bring your curl type to full definition until they’re photoshoot ready!

Check out our Flaxseed Styling Bundle to help hold and show off your amazing 4B curls and coils to the perfect definition for this style. This way you won’t have to worry about any of those pesky fly-aways throughout the day and the best part is that it will never leave your hair dehydrated. And if you want to spice things up a little, try doing a stitch braid instead. Be fun with it! Try this style with as little or as many braids as possible and in as many intricate part designs as you want.

5. Cornrows into a Bun

Similar to the hairstyle above, this hairstyle is perfect for when you want a protective style ready to take on corporate America, traveling for the week, or are going somewhere special. When doing this hairstyle, make sure you have TONS of bobby-pins to keep your bun in place. Especially if you plan on keeping it in the hairstyle for a week or longer! With this style, we want our hair to be as silky as possible, to get that perfectly hydrated shine with our hair.

To achieve this look, make as many or as little cornrows as you like around your head and end them at the crown of your head or at the base of your head (or any other place you want to create your bun) all the way down to the ends. For this, it’s easiest if you start with the braids at the back of your head and work your way around to the front. Next, tie off each cornrow and wrap them into a bun at the crown (or base) of your head.

You can try this hairstyle with stitch braids or different sized cornrows too, for more intricate designs and variations. Try adding decorative bobby-pins for a special occasion or a hair clip on your bun to stylize it to your personality and liking.

Try using NaturAll’s Edge Control Black to control any frizz and fly-aways and prevent breakage. This will also cover any greying roots and fill in any thinning edges while promoting edge hair growth.

With all of these braided hairstyles and their variations, always remember to use edge control for the sleekest look possible that will turn everyone’s heads. The Flaxseed Styling Bundle is the perfect gift for your hair when doing any braided hairstyles. With the Flaxseed Styling Bundle, you can choose any one of our edge controls along with either our Flaxseed Gel or Curling Custard. No matter the combination you opt for, our products will never leave your hair feeling sticky, hard, or crunchy.

If you decide to keep your hair braided for two or more weeks, be sure to deep condition when you take it out. As a rule of thumb, it’s best to deep condition your hair twice a month to keep it nice, healthy, and promote growth. Using our Strengthening Jamaican Black Castor Oil, Moringa-Monoi & Carrot Bundle once you take out your braids you will make removing tangles so much easier by helping to repair and soften your hair. It is pretty common to get dry, brittle hair or a big buildup of product when doing braided hairstyles, so be ready to use one of the deep conditioners from the Fresh Frozé Treatment Deep Conditioner Bundle when taking out your hair. This amazing bundle comes with the following five frozen treats for your hair:

At NaturAll, we create and elevate clean haircare and beauty standards, providing freshly-made products that are better for you and your hair. Sourced from small farmers in Jamaica and Ghana. We source ingredients directly from small farmers in Jamaica and Ghana, so we always know how our ingredients are sourced and exactly who is being supported by our business. We are proud to support Black farmers and small businesses around the world. We believe that what goes on your body is as important as what goes in it. Too many hair products are made with synthetic ingredients that are irritating, damaging, or even hazardous, and the problem is worse in hair products marketed to Black women.
